Plains Justice Attorney Briefs Nebraska Farmers on Oil Spill Response

Later this week in Grand Island, Nebraska, Plains Justice Staff Attorney Paul Blackburn will present our new report on emergency response planning on the Keystone tar sands pipeline system at the annual meeting of Nebraska Farmers Union. Nebraska farmers are concerned about potential risks to the unique and highly erosive Sandhills, and the underlying Ogallala Aquifer, which is priceless to the region’s agricultural producers. Nebraskans, including the Legislature’s Natural Resources Committee, are increasingly concerned about the risk associated with the pipeline system and shocked to discover how little authority they have in the siting process.

Other speakers include TransCanada public affairs consultant Jeff Rauh, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, Daryll Ray of the Agricultural Policy Analysis Center at the University of Tennessee, and National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson, who will speak on the upcoming 2012 Farm Bill.
