Cool Congregations Comes to Muscatine, Iowa

Our friends at Iowa Interfaith Power and Light are holding a “Cool Congregations” workshop this Saturday in Muscatine, teaching locals about a pro-active, faith-based response to the challenge of global warming and signing people up for free energy audits from Muscatine’s municipal utility.  The amazing Sarah Webb of Cedar Falls, Iowa, is the contact.  Details below.  If you’d like to know more about interfaith action on climate, inquire with Sarah or drop a note to info at plainsjustice dot org (we spell out email addresses so spambots can’t see them on the blog).

People of faith across Iowa are caring for God’s creation by solving climate change in their own homes and saving money in the process. The Cool Congregations earth stewardship program will provide you with the tools you need to make a difference in your home, congregation, and community.

During the three hour workshop, participants will learn about the ABC’s of climate change and the religious response; how to measure your carbon footprint and ideas for reducing it; and how to organize a Cool Congregations program in your local faith community. The training includes a Cool Congregations manual, resource CD, and a Carbon Calculator designed specifically for Iowa.

Added Bonus: Muscatine Power helps us save energy

Muscatine Power will be sharing information and answering questions on their energy efficiency program rebates on electric appliances (dishwashers, dryers, electric ranges and more), air conditioners, and compact fluorescent bulbs. They also will be signing participants up for free home energy audits that include thermal imaging and blower door testing, and giving away free CFLs!

1) Click here to register or call 515-238-3587. Each participant must register.

2) You will receive a “Carbon Footprint checklist”, which asks you about your entire household’s energy use for the last 12 months.  Each participant should fill one out and bring it along.

3) To attend the workshop, we ask that you become a member of Iowa IPL. Join online by clicking here or bring your membership fee to the workshop: $25/person OR $50/congregation.*
